My daily trek takes me to Racetrac. Conveniently located across the street from my house, I stop there for whatever the needs of the day might bring. Periodically I'll grab a sandwich, typically tuna fish, and some chips. Last weekend, while I was getting my car inspected, oil changed, and a car wash, I ventured over to Racetrac, right next door, to grab a bite to eat.
I went to the sandwich display to get my usual tuna fish sandwich, and noticed the sandwiches had changed. They were adorned with new packaging and a sticker that read "New Recipe". As a consumer, the message computed as "New recipe? It must be better." I did wonder, however, why they had changed the recipe when I was already satisfied with the one they had previously. But I had to try it. I had to discover what was so great about this "New Recipe".
Well, it was a new recipe alright! It was terrible! The bread was brittle, as if they had partnered with a "day-old" bread factory, and the tuna fish, well, it was present but my taste buds couldn't discern it over the strong taste of celery. Additionally, they had reduced the amount of tuna fish spread on the sandwich! What I think Racetrac meant to say on their new packaging was "less value, higher price!"
Racetrac fooled me into thinking I was purchasing a tastier meal when in fact I was paying more money for far less. In marketing this is called, increasing profits at the expense of the customer. Of course, the folks at Racetrac corporate have a much fancier name for it, probably to make themselves feel better about screwing the customer, but it equates to the same thing. For this faux pas, the rating we give the Racetrac "New Recipe" Tuna Fish Sandwich is a big fat 0.
Racetrac "New Recipe" Tuna Fish Sandwich Product satisfaction = 0
Congratulations Racetrac - you could make our "Top Worst Companies" list.
